The Ball-Chatham Educational Foundation Presents ~ A Parade of Pigs!
The BCEF is launching a new community-wide fundraiser this spring – Parade of Pigs for Kids! The fundraiser aims to help enrich the creativity and innovative potential of our students by collecting donations throughout the community in piggy banks specially painted by some of the district’s most talented artists!
On May 31st the ceramic banks will be auctioned off at a cookout on the patio at Island Bay Yacht Club – hosted by Dave Daniels from 103.7 WDBR.
Monies raised will help purchase new kilns at Ball and Chatham Elementary and Glenwood High School, (two of which are nearly 25 years old) and also support the foundation’s Beyond the Walls grants for learning opportunities and technologies not presently available to Ball-Chatham students.
Ticket price for the cookout/auction is $25 per person, and can be reserved by calling the Ball-Chatham District Office at 217-483-2416 or emailing bschroeder@chathamschools.org before May 21st.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Issues an S.O.S. for Bowl For Kids? Sake
Big Brothers Big Sisters Issues an S.O.S. for Bowl For Kids’ Sake
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Illinois Capital Region’s largest fundraiser, “Bowl For Kids’ Sake” presented by Illini Bank, should have wrapped up it’s final weekend in March. The agency, which will be celebrating 40 years of providing one-to-one mentoring to children in and around the Springfield area in June of 2012, fell almost $50,000.00 short of their revenue goal set in place for the 2012 Bowl For Kids’ Sake event.
“We were down almost 50 teams this year” stated Chris Hembrough, Executive Director, BBBS. Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to finding a way to make up the loss. “The staff at BBBS was not going to sit back and settle for the shortfall” said Hembrough, “within 24 hours of identifying our final numbers, a plan of action was put in place to address recovering the loss of funds. An S.O.S. “Bowl For Kids’ Sake” has been scheduled at King Pin Lanes, Friday, July 13, 2012.” declared Hembrough.
Although BBBS did not reach its goal, there were several businesses that came out in full support of this year’s event. Marine Bank, one of our long-time corporate partners, had another strong showing at this year’s Bowl For Kids’ Sake Event. This year Team Marine brought out more than 70 bowlers and raised more than $11,500, in easily capturing our Bank Challenge trophy for the seventh straight year! Chris Zettek, Marine Bank’s CEO (and former Big Brother and BBBS Past Board President) said, “Supporting the great work of Big Brothers Big Sisters is an easy sell among Marine Bank employees. Each year we have no trouble getting this kind of participation in support of one-to-one mentoring that is making such a big difference right here in our own community.” The Illinois State Police showed their support raising $3,400.00 on Cops For Kids’ Day, securing the top spot for the Law Enforcement Challenge. The local Walgreen’s stores participated in BFKS this year for the first time, and had over 40 employees, all wearing their red Walgreen’s shirts in support of their company, while supporting BBBS.
Bowl For Kids’ Sake is the agency’s largest fundraiser, raising the additional $50,000.00 will ensure the children served in our community can continue to be matched with caring adult role models.
The immediate challenge for Big Brothers Big Sisters is to recruit a total of 66 team captains. The captains will commit to forming a team of 5 or 6 bowlers to help raise money by soliciting pledges from the community. They will then come to King Pin Lanes to bowl, enjoy free food and drinks, while celebrating their support and the success of Big Brothers Big Sisters. To find out more information on how to register a team, call BBBS at 217-753-1216.
Area Eyewear Donations to Romania
Area Eyewear Donations to Romania
Pastor John Hutton, his wife Mandy and their children Ashley and Kylie, along with Dr. Jason McDowell, his wife Mary Ellen and their children Clayton and Carter recently traveled to Romania to provide eye care and eyewear to the children at the Beraca Orphanage and to the people of Jdiora, Romania. Both families are member of the Global Outreach Center in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Pastor Hutton and International Eyecare Center optometrist Dr. McDowell set up four clinics at the orphanage. Their family members helped with gathering patient information, pretesting and pulling glasses from the inventory. Dr McDowell performed over 300 exams and provided more than 350 pairs of new and used glasses, sunglasses and reading glasses. The families also spent a day in a gypsy village handing out groceries to needy families.
IEC’s support began months ago at all nine locations with collection boxes for glasses. Over 1,500 glasses were gathered with the community’s donations as well as conations of sunglasses and new prescription glasses made at International Eyecare Center’s optical laboratory.
The group plans another trip in 2013 and will continue to collect for that trip. IEC offices also collect used glasses for local Lions Clubs.
CUT-A-THON TO BENEFIT MISSING CHILDREN May 23
CUT-A-THON TO BENEFIT MISSING CHILDREN
A cut-a-thon to raise money for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) will be held on May 23, 2012 from 8am to 7pm at University of Spa & Cosmetology Arts, 2913 W. White Oaks Drive.
In observance of National Missing Children’s Day, USCA will join with other cosmetology schools nationwide to raise money for NCMEC. Haircuts and manicures will be offered for $5.00. In addition to haircuts and manicures, the school will be offering facials for $10.00. All money raised that day will be donated to NCMEC.
“USCA is participating in this national cut-a-thon because we believe that volunteerism and community service are important to the success and growth of our students and the well-being of our community,” states Jamie Kauffman, Director of Operations.
“Research has found that more than 2,000 children are reported missing every day and that one in five girls and one in 10 boys will be sexually exploited by the time they reach adulthood. In the face of these potential risks, it is more important than ever that parents and guardians teach children how to stay safer. NCMEC is an important resource in helping with this mission,” adds Lynne Lowder, owner.
NCMEC was founded in 1984 and since then has assisted law enforcement in the recovery of more than 157,720 missing children. The organization’s CyberTipline has handled more than 816,800 reports of child sexual exploitation. To learn more about NCMEC, call its toll-free, 24-hour hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST or visit its website at www.missingkids.com.

Boy Scout Troop 3 to Celebrate 70th Anniversary
Boy Scout Troop 3, Chartered to Douglas Avenue UMC in Springfield is planning a celebration of the Troop’s 70th Anniversary of continuous service to the youth of Springfield. The celebration will be held at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 21, 2012.
The reunion planning committee is seeking information from any former members of the Troop or the associated Explorer Post and Venture Crew. Former members should send their name and address to the reunion committee at: troop03.reunion@gmail.com.
Troop 3 has been chartered by Douglas Avenue Methodist Church for its entire existence. The Troop was originally founded in the spring of 1916. Troop 3 has served more than 2300 scouts over the years, 84 of whom have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
